A crown, also called a cap, covers a damaged tooth to restore, health, shape, and function. A deep cavity or crack may require a crown for a lasting restoration.

Dental crowns can protect a cracked tooth, restore an excessive decayed tooth, or improve the cosmetic appearance of a tooth. Crowns fully cover the entire visible surface of an affected tooth and add strength, durability, and stability. Crowns can be made of ceramic, metal, or a combination of both.

Ceramic or porcelain crowns are not only esthetically pleasing, but durable as well. They are a great choice for front teeth because they possess a translucency that mirrors natural teeth. Because of the force of biting and chewing, porcelain crowns may not be recommended for back teeth.

Metal crowns, often made of gold or a gold alloy, withstand biting and chewing and will not chip. Because of their unnatural appearance, metal crowns are usually placed on teeth that do not show while smiling.

Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns provide strong, durable, and esthetically pleasing treatment for both front and back teeth.  While the cosmetic appearance can be excellent, they are not as esthetically pleasing as all-porcelain dental crowns.
