Parts of the Teeth
Crown – The crown is the visible portion of the tooth above the gum line.
Tooth Enamel – Composed of strong minerals, tooth enamel is the outer coating of your teeth that protects the sensitive interior structures from bacteria. Tooth enamel is primarily composed of calcium phosphate and is the strongest substance in your body.
Roots – Your teeth have roots that are anchored into the jawbone. The roots also house nerve endings.
Dentin – Located beneath tooth enamel, dentin houses small tubules that contain cellular material. Unlike tooth enamel, dentin is very vulnerable to decay.
Pulp Chamber – Located inside the tooth, the pulp chamber houses important cellular material and nerve endings. In healthy teeth, the pulp chamber is protected from external bacteria; however, severe decay can inflame and infect nerve endings.
Types of Teeth
Incisors – Located at the front of your mouth, incisors are anterior teeth that do not have cusps and are used for biting at food.
Canines – These teeth are sharpest teeth in your mouth. Located on the upper set of teeth, canines tear food.
Bicuspids – Also known as premolars, bicuspids help grind and chew food into smaller pieces.
Molars – Located at the back of teeth, molars have the flattest surface and multiple cusps. Their flat surfaces help grind food for swallowing.
