Farmington Hills Dentist Explains Occlusal Equilibration

What is occlusal equilibration?

Small changes to your smile can have a big impact on your cosmetic appearance. From whitening your teeth a couple shades lighter, to gum contouring, the small details make a big difference in your smile. In the same way that tweaking your smile’s aesthetics can change your look, small changes in your bite can make drastic improvements for your occlusion. Occlusal equilibration involves making minimal changes to your teeth so that they fit together perfectly.

Dr. Askari may make changes to bulky dental work from previous dental restorations, adjust the cusps of individual teeth, or add height to some. Over the course of three appointments, our Farmington Hills dentist can help you improve your occlusion to create a “solid bite”. This means that your teeth will fit together optimally.

Why is occlusion important?

Your bite, or occlusion, is vital to many aspects of your oral health. A proper bite will prevent dental health issues like bruxism, TMJ disorder, and severe wear to your teeth. When your bite is misaligned, your teeth come together at odd angles when chewing, which can cause excessive damage to your tooth structure, such as chipping. When opposing teeth to not line up, your jaw muscles may strain to hold them in a more correct position. This causes jaw muscle strain that contributes to TMJ disorder. Additionally, when your back teeth are too close together, they may grind at night or clench during the day. This condition, called bruxism, can have far reaching consequences for your total wellbeing.
