Happy World Smile DayDid you know that today is World Smile Day? When Harvey Ball designed the iconic yellow smiley face in 1963 for an insurance company seeking to promote a positive workplace environment, he had no idea that it would become so well recognized. By 1999 Harvey became discouraged at the over-commercialization of his design, and established World Smile Day to remind people what the smiley is all about. Every year on the first Friday of October, the Harvey Ball World Smile Foundation sponsors the event in hopes of “improving this world, one smile at a time.”

What’s Really in a Smile?

Smiles have been linked to all kinds of positive effects, from the obvious good mood, to the less obvious improved immune system. You might wonder how a smile can cause a good mood when you thought it was the other way around, but the full list of physical and emotional benefits to smiling would probably surprise you even more. Smiling can help lower blood pressure, reduce stress, and boost the immune system. All three of these benefits are related to one another, and the mechanism that accomplishes them is relatively simple. Smiling for five minutes can lower your blood pressure, which in turn reduces stress, allowing your body to focus on the production of antibodies, boosting your immune system.
