Farmington Hills Dentist Receives Standing Ovation at Spring Expo

CDS ExpoWe have provided you with many blogs that cover various specifics of oral-systemic health. Dr. Aziza Askari, your Farmington Hills dentist, strongly believes in the research that has proven a connection between your dental and overall health. That’s why she was thrilled to offer a seminar called Your Mouth/Your Body at the Spring Expo that took place at Schoolcraft College’s Livonia campus today. Here’s a photo of some of our staff member’s enjoying the expo.

Oral-Systemic Conditions

Oral-systemic health runs a gamut of potential connections between the thousands of strains of bacteria that can be found in your mouth and different ailments all over your body. Gum disease has been linked to coronary artery disease, strokes, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, cancer,pre-term labor, and many other conditions. The same bacteria that cause gum disease – P. gingivalis – have been found in the knee joints of rheumatoid arthritis patients.

Oral HPV and Oral Cancer

Oral HPV is the same exact virus that can be found at a woman’s annual gynecology exam. This virus can not only lead to ovarian cancer but also oral cancer, depending on where the disease settles. OralDNA testing can check for oral HPV, thus potentially preventing countless cases of oral cancer. Malignancies that manifest in the mouth rarely show symptoms and can be very difficult to cure if not caught early.
