WomanStandingHave you ever received a dental crown? The process usually takes two visits and involves wearing a temporary crown while you wait for your customized crown to be completely fabricated. Temporary crowns are usually made of acrylic or stainless steel and serve as a one-size-fits-all cap over a tooth that is awaiting a customized permanent crown. Temp crowns can be cumbersome, uncomfortable, and ill-fitting. Imagine if you could get a natural looking porcelain crown put on your tooth in a single appointment. Your Farmington Hills dentist, Dr. Aziza Askari, describes one-visit crown technology called CEREC.

What is CEREC?

Chairside Economical Restorations of Esthetic Ceramic (CEREC®) is a computer design tool and a milling machine, all rolled into one. CEREC manufactures dental crowns with high-quality ceramic, right before a patient’s eyes. In a single appointment, you can be measured and fitted with a natural looking crown, color-matched to your existing teeth.

Here’s a bulleted list of the advantages of CEREC:

  • Uses some of the highest quality ceramic products
  • Minimally invasive
  • Cost effective
  • Comfortable
  • Saves time
  • More of your natural tooth can be saved
  • Restorations last longer

What Will a CEREC Procedure Involve?

Your dentist will need to start by preparing the decaying tooth for the procedure. All signs of infection will be removed, and the opening of the tooth will be made wider than the base. Impressions will be taken of your teeth with the CEREC camera, utilizing infrared wavelengths. Your dentist will bring the image up on the computer screen so that the tooth can be viewed from varying angles. Using this information, a customized crown will be designed. Within 15 minutes, the milling unit will produce a strong, attractive compressed ceramic restoration. Dental cement will affix the natural looking crown to the remains of your tooth, and you will be on your way with no need for a second visit.
