Mouth Pain FrustrationCavities are sometimes symptom free, initially. That’s why we recommend that patients visit Comfort Dental Spa every six months for a checkup and examination. If you have tooth decay that has reached a point where a filling is not enough, it’s quite possible that you will start to experience discomfort. Your Farmington Hills dentist, Dr. Aziza Askari is qualified to offer patients endodontic treatment. However, you may know these procedures better as root canals.

Understanding the Anatomy of Teeth

Though many people call it a root canal, your root canals actually reside inside every one of your teeth. Your tooth has between one and four roots, and each of those has a canal. These tunnels allow minerals and nutrients to flow through your teeth. They also help transmit the sense of pain to your nerves if your tooth has been overrun by untreated decay. Root canal procedures are generally recommended when you have a severe enough dental injury or when severe tooth decay has ravaged your tissues.

Reattaching a Tooth’s Roots

If a tooth is knocked out, you may be surprised to learn that it can possible be reattached via root canal therapy. As soon as the tooth is dislodged, you should attempt to get in to see Dr. Askari and our team at Comfort Dental Spa as swiftly as possible. The tooth can dry out in about an hour. To try and combat this, soak it in milk or Gatorade. For a classic root canal treatment, Dr. Askari will make a tiny opening in the dentin of your tooth. The infected pulp tissues are removed and the hole that remains will be cleaned, disinfected, and then filled with a biocompatible material about the same consistency as rubber. To completely seal your tooth in order to avoid future infection, the tooth will be sealed with either a filling or dental crown.
