Minor Dental Issues Don’t Belong in the ER

Emergency RoomHave you ever gone to the emergency room for a dental issue? A new report is looking at the ramifications of avoiding preventive dental appointments on the budget of ERs in Michigan. This hits close to home for Farmington Hills dentist, Dr. Aziza Askari, as prevention is such a simple way to avoid many expensive and time consuming dental issues. Emergency rooms should remain less crowded to accommodate people with true health emergencies.

Avoidable ER Visits

The Anderson Economic Group implemented a research study looking at about 7,000 people with cavities, abscesses, and other preventable dental problems in 2011. These people all made their way to ERs in Michigan cities.  Only 1,000 of these patients actually required hospitalization. Hospitals made nearly $15 million in the state to treat simple, highly preventable dental issues, but that’s only 25% of the actual cost of the care. This means staff and resources are being wasted on conditions which could have been easily treated if the patient had kept up with their six month dental checkups.

Prevention is Key

Alex Rosaen, a representative of AEG says, “Again, (that money was spent) for conditions that started as dental conditions, that could have been treated in a traditional dental setting, like a dentist’s office.” Many of the ER patients even had dental insurance, but for unknown reasons, they did not take advantage of their preventive checkups and waited until their pain became emergent. While expanded government health care programs will hopefully lower these ER dental visits, other solutions are necessary. How can you help avoid being a part of these unfortunate statistics? If you don’t already have a dental checkup on your calendar, and it’s been longer than six months since you’ve had your mouth examined and your teeth cleaned, call Comfort Dental Spa right away.
