smilegirlredtopDo you remember hearing us mention preventive solutions for your child’s smile? If so, you may be considering selecting dental sealants for your son or daughter. We recognize that while you want to do what is best for your little one (or teenager), parents typically want to feel wholly educated on treatments before saying “yes.” To understand the many benefits of dental sealants for your child, we encourage you to first become a bit more familiar.

Sealants Are Simple

A sealant is a very simple preventive treatment for your son or daughter. We will clean your child’s tooth in preparation. Next, we will paint a very thin layer of plastic over your child’s back teeth, which are typically difficult to care for, especially for younger children. The sealant will coat the chewing surfaces of molars and premolars. To complete this service, we may use a special light to dry and harden the sealant or it will set on its own.

This Treatment Is Effective

This is a simple yet effective option for preventing tooth decay. The sealant coats the chewing surfaces of your child’s teeth – areas of the tooth that include grooves and little areas for plaque to hide. Plaque is the leading cause of cavities, which may lead to the need for fillings and other restorative services. By using dental sealants to create a barrier between your child’s teeth and plaque, you extend the health and comfort of your little one’s smile, while improving your child’s ability to perform successful dental hygiene. Even better? This treatment may last for up to 10 years.

About Your Child’s Candidacy

We offer dental sealants for children of most ages. If your child’s teeth are extremely prone to tooth decay, we may begin this treatment on baby teeth. However, we most often provide treatment to children ages six through 16. In addition, for our adult patients whose teeth have not experienced cavities but display dramatic grooves, we may offer sealants to prolong the health of hard-to-clean teeth.
