jawpainwomansweaterTMJ disorder, or TMD, is a tricky subject for many patients. First, the name requires some explaining. Your TMJs are your temporomandibular joints – or the jaw joint that lies on either side of your head, connecting your jaw to the rest of your cranium. When these TMJs malfunction, you suffer from TMJ disorder – or TMD. Now that we’ve gotten that cleared up, we can delve into to the heart of the matter: you may suffer from TMD and not even realize it. Wondering if TMJ treatment is something that could potentially improve your daily life? Read further:

You Suffer From Symptoms

There is no one particular symptom or cause of TMD that points to a definitive need for TMJ treatment. Instead, by observing the symptoms of your discomfort and asking questions about your daily life and health, we may determine whether your problems have developed as a result of poor jaw joint function. If you suffer from one or more of the following, we encourage you to speak with us about treatment:

  • Your jaw pops, clicks, or makes other noises when you open your mouth, close your mouth, or chew
  • You suffer from pain or discomfort while chewing
  • Sometimes, your jaw locks for a moment when you open or close your mouth
  • You experience ringing in the ears
  • You may suffer from mild headaches, neck aches, or shoulder aches
  • The area surrounding your jaw – including your ear – may feel sore

Why Treatment Is Important

The sooner we diagnose TMD and begin treatment, the greater our ability to reduce or eliminate your symptoms and discomfort, while preventing long-term damage. We will thoroughly examine you and, in addition to treating the symptoms, identify potential underlying causes to truly treat the entire concern. For example, if you suffer from bruxism (or teeth grinding) or a bad bite, we may correct these issues to further protect your TMJs.
