dentalimplantprocedureIf you are missing a single tooth, there is the option of getting bridge treatment or dental implant treatment. An implant is a surgical procedure that replaces the root of your tooth with a titanium post that acts like the original root. Dental implant surgery is a stable and permanent procedure. There are several steps to placing an implant and it requires a dental surgeon with implant experience. The dental implant procedure is a complex procedure, but implants have a success rate of nearly 98 percent.

Implant Surgery

Placing an implant is a complex procedure that is done in stages. First x-rays are taken and a treatment plan regarding how and where to place the implant is determined. The plan is custom tailored to each individual situation and includes how many teeth need replacing and the condition of the patient’s jawbone. Surgically placing the titanium post into the jawbone of a patient is no easy feat. There are nerves and blood vessels that need to be avoided. Many times, the planning process involves a variety of dental specialists including an oral and maxillofacial surgeon and periodontist. After a plan is determined, the post is carefully placed by drilling a hole into the patient’s jawbone according to a schematic, so the placement is successful. Because it is a surgical procedure a local anesthetic, sedation, general anesthesia, or a combination is required.

Stage 2

Once the implant is placed it requires up to three months to heal before the procedure can be completed. During the three months, the titanium post osseointegrates with the bone. In other words, the post and bone grow together forming a new and stable root for the artificial tooth to be placed on.

Stage 3

An abutment is attached to the titanium post. This abutment is what holds the artificial tooth (crown). The crown is fabricated in a dental lab according to the size, color, and shape of the original tooth. It is then permanently cemented to the abutment and the process is complete.
