cdswhiteningDo you have discolored teeth? If so, then you understand how teeth stains can impact the appearance of your smile. In order to achieve a brighter and more attractive smile you may need cosmetic treatment. We offer a number of options for removing or masking discoloration, such as professional teeth whitening and porcelain veneers. Do you need porcelain veneers or teeth whitening?

Different Types of Teeth Stains

There are actually two distinct types of teeth stains. The most common appear on the surface of our teeth and are referred to as “extrinsic” stains. These are the result of the foods and drinks we consume, as well as smoking and age. “Intrinsic” stains form below the surface of the teeth. Intrinsic stains occur as a result of injury to the teeth, fluorosis, and the use of certain medications, such as tetracycline. Each type requires different solutions.

Teeth Whitening

We actually offer two very different professional teeth whitening treatments. The first, Zoom! Whitening, is an office-based procedure that involves coating the teeth in a bleaching gel and activating it with a curing light. Stains are removed in under an hour and the procedure best addresses extrinsic stains.

There is also a home-based alternative. After creating a set of custom-made trays, the doctor prescribes a powerful bleaching gel. Each day the patient fills the trays with gel and wears them for a set amount of time. At-home whitening trays best address extrinsic and minor intrinsic discoloration in about a week to ten days.

Porcelain Veneers

What if you have serious intrinsic discoloration that doesn’t respond to either whitening trays or the Zoom! system? Then we can mask them with porcelain veneers. A very thin and lifelike restoration, veneers are attached to the front of the teeth and they mask permanent stains and correct a number of other cosmetic issues.
